Abstract: The collection includes photographs, negatives, contact sheets, photocopies, and other materials related to African American history from slavery to the Civil Rights Movement to the present, with an emphasis on Charleston and the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. Charleston's prominent African American families are represented, especially alumni of the Avery Normal Institute, as well as lifeways in rural areas and the Sea Islands. Images show the area's physical structures, associated people, and activities of African American churches, businesses, schools, civic and social organizations, burial societies, and professional associations. The work of Charleston-area photographers and photography studios is represented. Major events featured include W. E. B. Du Bois' visit to Charleston in 1917, the Hospital Workers' Strike of 1969, and public programs and educational events sponsored by the Avery Research Center.

Collection Overview

The collection includes photographs, negatives, contact sheets, photocopies, and other materials related to African American history from slavery to the Civil Rights Movement to the present, with an emphasis on Charleston and the Lowcountry region of South Carolina.

Charleston and Lowcountry figures include Septima Poinsette Clark, Benjamin Cox, Mary Moultrie, the Jenkins family, Tobias Gadson, Sr., Harvey Gantt, Jonathon Green, the Harleston family, Daniel A. Payne, Bill Saunders, Phillip Simmons, Modjeska Simpkins, and Judge J. Waites Waring. Alumni of the Avery Normal Institute and the Avery Institute and staff and supporters of the Avery Research Center are heavily represented. Images of nationally-known celebrities, such as Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Oprah Winfrey, are also included.

The collection also includes copies of the work of South Carolina photographers such as Michael Francis Blake, Arthur L. Macbeth, the Anderson Studio, the Joyce Art Gallery, and Leidloff's Studio. The photographs of Chansonetta Stanley Emmons during her visits to Charleston, especially those depicting African Americans on South Carolina plantations, have been reproduced.

School images feature buildings, athletic and extracurricular activities, classroom scenes, students, faculty, and staff of the Avery Normal Institute, Burke High School, Charleston Normal Industrial School, Jenkins Orphanage, Immaculate Conception School, Laing School, Mount Zion Elementary, A. Burnett Rhett School, and Citizenship Schools on the Sea Islands, among many others.

Churches include Emanual A.M.E. Church, First Calvary Baptist Church, Saint Mark's Episopal Church, Saint Matthews Baptist Church, Saint Phillip's Church, and Shiloh A.M.E. Church.

Organizations include African American fraternities and sororities; Entre Nous Bridge Club, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Owl's Whist Club, Phyllis Wheatley Literary and Social Club, and the South Carolina Association of Black Journalists. Also includes images of cemetaries maintained by burial societies such as the Brown Fellowship Society (later Century Fellowship Society), Humane and Friendly Society, Unity and Friendship Society.

Major events featured include W. E. B. Du Bois' visit to Charleston in 1917, the Hospital Workers' Strike of 1969, tributes and re-enactments honoring the all-black 54th and 55th Massachusetts Regiments, and public programs and educational events sponsored by the Avery Research Center.

Lowcountry lifeways, including boating, fishing, sharecropping, and island environs, are also depicted.
