SEPTEMBER

20 - Moja Juried Art Exhibition and Reception. Works in all media by artists from the Southeastern Region will be exhibited. Three cash awards are given for first, second, and third place. 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm McKinley Washington Auditorium. Exhibit through October 30, 2009. Admission: FREE

24 - Lecture / Booksigning / Reception: Dr. Edda L. Fields-Black, Associate Professor, Carnegie Mellon University, Department of History, reads excerpts and discusses her new book, "Deep Roots: Rice Farmers in West Africa and the African Diaspora." 6:00 pm- 8:00 pm. McKinley Washinton Auditorium Admission: FREE

28 - Moja Writers Workshop is a series of writer’s workshops for selected middle school students. Facilitated by Bernice and Art Tate founders of Storybooks 4 Kids. 3 - Family Weekend. Gullah / Geechee Culture in the Lowcountry. Tour and presentation by Georgette Mayo, Avery Research Center Interim Director and Gullah stories by Lowcountry storyteller Carolyn White. 10:00 am- 11:30 amMcKinley Washington Auditorium. Free.

3 - Moja POETRY AND STORYTELLING. Noted regional and local poets and storytellers perform at twilight with an additional afternoon outreach performance at the Avery Research Center. 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm. 1st Floor Seminar Room. Admission: FREE

8 - Conversation With Our Donors: Sherry Suttles, author of Images of America: Atlantic Beach (Arcadia Press) by Sherry Suttles. The author will discuss Atlantic Beach's historical significance as a vacation mecca for the African American middle class during the segregated South. Through the use of vintage photographs, Atlantic Beach gives us a window into a lively, thriving community which was once a haven for African American vacationers. Ms. Suttles has donated the materials gathered and compiled during her Atlantic Beach research to the Avery Research Center archives. McKinley Washington Auditorium. 6:00 pm.

4 - Charleston Jazz Initiative: Seabrook Jazz Quilt Trunk Show. 6:00 pm. McKinley Washington Auditorium.

12 - NAACP Centennial Panel Discussion. This program is in conjuntion with the "Advocacy and Activism" exhibit.
