Accessing the Collections at the Avery Research Center

The Phillis Wheatly Literary and Social Club Reading Room is now open by appointment only. Appointment options and procedures may change as institutional policies develop, best practices continue to emerge, or where circumstances merit adjustments.

General Information

  • All in-person research will be by appointment only. Walk-in appointments will not be permitted.
  • Occupancy in the Reading Room will be limited to one researcher appointment (max 2 people/appointment) at any given time
  • To follow COVID-19 health and safety standards a mask/face covering must be worn at all time and maintain six feet social distance from staff members.

Virtual Services

The Avery Research Center will be offering virtual services for the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters.

We welcome inquiries from all users, regardless of affiliation. Researchers can get in touch with Avery Research Center reference professionals via email or arrange a virtual research consultation via Zoom with an archivist here: Choose Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture from the left-hand menu and then select the day and time.

Researchers can also explore collections via our Archives Finding Aid SystemDiscovery Service (library catalog), the Lowcountry Digital Library, or through various Research Guides.

COVID-19 POLICIES: Avery Research Center is not open for tours or walk-in researchers. Researchers must schedule a consultation before making an appointment.
