The Phillis Wheatley Literary and Social Club Reading Room is now open by appointment only. The reading room is open from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

General Information

  • All in-person research will be by appointment only. Walk-in appointments will not be permitted.
  • Occupancy in the Reading Room will be limited to one researcher appointment (max 2 people/appointment) at any given time
  • To follow COVID-19 health and safety standards a mask/face covering is optional and maintain six feet social distance from staff members.
  • Access to an on-site appointment will only be granted after a virtual consultation. Make a virtual consultation (via Zoom), call 843.953.7608, or fill out form.

 

Virtual Services

 

We welcome inquiries from all users, regardless of affiliation. Researchers can get in touch with Avery Research Center reference professionals via email or arrange a virtual research consultation via Zoom with an archivist.

 

Researchers can also explore collections via our Archives Finding Aid SystemDiscovery Service (library catalog), the Lowcountry Digital Library, or through various Research Guides.

BUILDING CLOSURES: We will be closed to the public on Friday, May 10th and Monday, May 27th. Building and reading room hours may have closures outside of this period due to private events, contact us in advance for further assistance.

MUSEUM TOURS: The Avery Research Center offers self-guided tours Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1030AM-12PM and 2PM-330PM. For large groups we ask you limit 25 people or fewer per time slot for self-guided tours. Due to staffing shortages Avery will not be offering guided tours to the general public until further notice.

ARCHIVES: Researchers must have a consultation BEFORE making a research appointment.
